Company Background

Wellington Management Company (WMC), is one of America's oldest and largest independent investment management companies. Tracing their origins back to 1928, the firm manages portfolios for some of the nations largest institutions. Clients include AT&T, the State of North Carolina, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Projects

Rather than focusing on a single, large project, this contract required work on a variety of projects and technologies, from C++ to Visual Basic to RTF (Rich Text Format). Main tasks completed include the following:

 
Evaluation and enhancements for C++ Windows NT DLL (Dynamic Link Library) providing transparent database access to Excel spreadhseets in the form of Excel add-ins.
 
Redesign of tokenizer in multithreaded database server with load balancing capabilities.
 
Port 16-bit Visual Basic application to 32-bit and add Oracle connectivity.
 
Port C database code from a proprietary Allbase database to Oracle. This includes migrating the SQL queries and transactions to an all-new database schema, and resolving performance bottlenecks.
 
Redesign of reporting application to handle more flexible output formats. Wrote additional C++ classes to properly modularize formatting code and enhance capabilities.
